Only a day away

Tomorrow, just as little orphan Annie tells us, is only a day away. That means that we are only one day away from the final second quarter regional gathering of Optimist Club members in the PNW District.

Optimist Clubs from British Columbia and Washington will be highlighted in this one-day event designed to provide a forum for all clubs to talk about the things they do in their communities to help others. Attendees will also learn about the recently extended membership incentive, how to be an effective club leader, new club building, how your club can fight human trafficking and a special presentation about wind generation in our district. No, not the overly verbose past governor type of wind generation. Steve Enyeart will really tell the group all about the windmills that dot the Columbia Gorge and beyond.

It's not too late to participate in this friendly gathering of Optimist Clubs. You may still register online or at the door. Here are the meeting details:

Get a head start on St. Patty's Day with the Meridian Optimist Club as they celebrate the Luck o'the Irish Casino Night for the fourth consecutive year.

A joint project with the Meridian Firefighters Drum and Bugle Corps, this activity is fun for the community and raises money for good causes including the Optimist Youth Training Center, the Meridian Food Bank and the Meridian Firefighters.

Young boxers compete at the Caldwell Optimist Club Silver Belt Invitational

Caldwell Optimist Club member Manny Albares will be honored on Saturday, February 18 by the City of Caldwell when the community recognizes the day as Manny Albares Day. Manny has been serving the youth of the community for 30 years as the founder and lead coach of the PAL youth boxing program.

Saturday is also the day of the Silver Belt Invitational - the boxing event that brings youth boxers from as far away as Oklahoma to compete against traveling teams from Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Wyoming and the home club of Caldwell, Idaho.

According to Manny, the children who box in the program learn to be good students and family members as they learn the discipline of boxing. As a PAL program, they gain respect for law enforcement and the officers that protect their community. As a Caldwell Optimist Club program, they also learn that others appreciate them for the remarkable young people that they are.

You don't want to miss the Silver Belt Invitational at the O'Connor Field House in Caldwell. There will be a matinee event at 1:00 p.m. for the younger boxers and the marquee event starts at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are available at the door.

Proceeds support the PAL Boxing program and other youth projects of the Caldwell Optimist Club.

Hello Fellow Optimists,

As this years A&A chairperson, I have come up with aplan for the 2011-2012 meetings.

I have always enjoyed district meetings and hearing whatother clubs do. I have always returnedhome with wonderful new ideas.

So I am asking all the clubs that will be attending themeeting in NewportMay 18^th and 19^th to please bring a past CPA book. This will allow you to show off a project orfundraiser that you are proud of, as well as show our new Optimist members howa CPA book is done.

In addition, if you have a scrapbook, a threefold orbulletin board that you would like to display, then please bring them aswell. Let’s show off what makes usproud!

We will be doing this at all the meetings this year. At the end of the year there will be prizesgiven away to those that have got involved, and those that just have fun withthis project.

The Roy Proctor Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to anOptimist or Optimists for lifetime service to the Pacific NorthwestDistrict. This award recognizesindividuals who have given outstanding and ongoing service to theDistrict. It is not intended for thehundreds of outstanding Optimists who serve their clubs and communities but donot participate at the district level. Theaward is intended to honour a living individual, or individuals, rather than tobe a memorial award.

Award recipients must meet all three of the followingcriteria:

1. Having given at least 10 yearsof service to the District, which does NOT need to include having served as adistrict officer; AND

2. Having built a new club or havingconsistently brought in new members over his Optimist career or having servedas District Foundation Representative; AND

3. Having provided inspiration and motivation to fellowOptimists.

A selection committee comprised of previous Roy ProctorAward winners meets annually at the Third Quarter District Meeting to choosethe recipient(s), whose award(s) will be presented at the District Convention. The selection committee chooses from nomineessubmitted by Pacific Northwest District Optimists.

That is 70 Idaho Optimists; our goal was 101, so we did very well for the first PNW regional meeting. Middleton is our newest club in the gem state and had more members than all but Twin Falls. WOW !!

Special thanks to Rich Craddock, president of TF club and Keleigh Godfrey. These two dedicated leaders, along with all of their committee members, did a fabulous job of hosting this event.

Attendees got to meet Idaho Optimists as individuals, and about our fellow clubs. What fun! We were able to honor Frank Smoke, Boise Noon, for his 37 years of dedicated service selling programs at the BSU football games. Optimist rap star Barry Knoblich performed as well as Abe Lincoln. Who didn’t enjoy hearing Ian Johnson, BSU football hero? We got to hear what he was thinking as the play developed for the 2 point conversion that sank mighty Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. (“Don’t stumble, don’t stumble!”)

Linda Jackson does a marvelous job keeping us informed; keep her aware of your club activities so we can share with others. New Optimist Club building goes NxNW

Dallis Winsor, a former governor of the Alberta, Montana, Saskatchewan and N. Wyoming District (AMS&NW) has moved to Terrace, British Columbia and is working hard to bring optimism with him by starting up the brand new Kermodei Optimist Club of Terrace. In addition to prompting verbal support from the other Optimist Clubs in the PNW District, his effort brings up some questions that we will attempt to answer here.

Where in the BC is Terrace?

Spirit Bear

Terrace, BC is north, way north of the bastion of Optimist Clubs that populate the lower mainland. The city's website boasts that Terrace is the heart of the northwest. By air, it is 550 miles northwest of Vancouver, BC. According to Mapquest, it would take approximately 16 hours to drive the 850 miles from Vancouver, BC to Terrace, BC.

PNW District Optimist Club members might find this reference helpful: Terrace is halfway between the sponsor club Hillsboro, OR and Fairbanks, AK. Yes, that is north by northwest.

What's a Kermodei?
A Kermodei is a blonde or light-colored bear known by native tribes as a "spirit bear." The taxonomy claims that the Kermodei may be an albino black bear, but Wikipedia better defines the color morph as due to a recessive allele common in the population of the subspecies of the American Black Bear living in the region.

Cool! How can we help from a distance?
Dallis says he appreciates the support shown by the Optimist Clubs in the PNW District. Knowing that there is a base of support and other Optimist Club members and projects to turn to as they are beginning will help invigorate the new community. There are TWO more organizational meeting this week to put us over the top in the chartering of the brand new Kermodei Optimist Club of Terrace so that we can get on with the pleasant task of "Bringing Out the Best in Kids". A meeting was held yesterday at the Terrace Public Library. It was good to see some new, but enthusiastic, faces. Not everyone can make every meeting and, so, we've decided to offer two alternatives this week (but feel free to come to both get-togethers):

Wednesday Feb. 8 @ Boston Pizza @ 6:30 PM (FREE pizza!) and Sunday Feb. 12 @ the Terrace Public Library meeting room @ 2:00 PM (FREE snacks!). See you there. Bring your friends and neighbours---

Ian Johnson proposes

You might say it was "the other kiss" heard around the world caught live on ESPN. Following the Boise State victory at the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, running back Ian Johnson proposed to his girlfriend and now wife Chrissy.

Together they have gone on to be advocates for Boise State University and the football program.

The Pacific Northwest District - Optimist International is excited to announce that Chrissy and Ian Johnson will join us for the 2nd Quarter Regional Meeting in Twin Falls on February 11.

Ian will speak about his career at Boise State and in the NFL. He'll also talk about thinking outside of the box and staying motivated.

Optimists fight human trafficking

Human trafficking is slavery. We may think of it as something that happens to individuals in poor nations, but the truth is, it can happen to individuals anywhere, of any ethnicity, age, and socio-economic status. Prompted by Hollywood, our minds immediately think of the underground world of prostitution rings and drug cartels; but sadly, it is possible that persons who employ domestic workers or companies who exploit illegal workers may also be engaged by extension in human trafficking pursuits.

Individuals who are enslaved by human traffickers lose their independence and are forced to share their hard-earned money with their abuser. They also lose their health.

I'm sorry to place such a deep and dark subject on a website devoted to optimism. However, raising awareness for causes that will protect our children is a function of an Optimist Club and that is why the N. Kitsap Optimist Club, in conjunction with Break Free Kitsap and others, is conducting a week-long series of events to increase awareness of this horrible crime.

For their active part in the series, the N. Kitsap Optimists will present the Optimist International Internet Safety Program for adults and share copies of The Optimist Creed. Other activities include "Somebody's Daughter," a presentation from Seattle Police Detective Henry James, an overview of the extent of the problem, a presentation on Safe Secure and a call to action.

Adele Heinrich invites all PNW Optimists to participate, especially those who live in the Seattle-Tacoma area. Shawna Seals with The Poulsbo Inn will offer a reduced rate for Optimist volunteers to stay overnight. Call (360) 779-3921 and ask for Shawna directly.

The Eagle Optimist Club held a very successful Coats for Kids drive in 2011 with a major beneficiary being the St. Alphonsus Family C.A.R.E Maternal/Child Health Clinic. The clinic provides care to area refugees who have relocated to the Boise community from many different countries.

Beaverton Optimists help community celebrate 100th anniversary

The Beaverton Optimist Club was on hand at the Business Group's celebration of the City of Aloha's 100th Anniversary.

They set up a table to meet and greet folks; talk about optimism, club projects and fellowship, and they held a raffle for tickets to Breakfast with the Mayor at the Beaverton Optimist Club meeting on February 2 at the Peppermill Restaurant.

The Peppermill, Beaverton Optimist Club's regular meeting place, is located 17455 SW Farmington Road, Aloha, OR.

As Optimist Club members, we speak a lot about lending a helping hand to others, but we would be wise to remember those hands do so much more. Among other things, they help us tell stories with emphasis, make eating easier and allow us the wonderful sensation of touch. For the deaf and hard of hearing, they make communication possible.

Hands, or more aptly, a handshake, also allow us to pull others into our circle of influence and fellowship. Extend your handshake along with your help this year and you will give others the greatest gift of all: inclusion.

Caldwell Optimists take kids to the movies

Earlier this week, the Idaho Press Tribune ran a short but impressive tribute the Caldwell Optimist Club. They recognized them, along with Mayor Garrett Nancolas, for honoring the youth of the community at Youth Appreciation Day on November 12.

As part of the activities, Mayor Nancolas signed an official proclamation declaring the day to be Youth Appreciation Day in the City of Caldwell and the Caldwell Optimists sponsored free movies for children through 5th grade at the Reel Theatre.

According to Marlene Terry, a columnist for the Idaho Press Tribune who writes under the pseudonym Ida Chatter, the Caldwell Optimist Club is also known for youth soccer and bringing back the PAL Boxing Invitational, among other things.

Sometimes it takes a little time and persistence for our media outlets to recognize the small, but meaningful activities our Optimist Clubs perform in our communities. Thanks to the Idaho Press Tribune for noticing and many thanks to the Caldwell Optimist Club and President Connie Holt for all that you do.

Optimist volunteers at Boise State football games for 37 years

Last week, The Idaho Statesman published a front-page article about Optimist volunteer Frank Smoke, "91-year-old Boise State fan stands out from crowd."

A member of the Boise Noon Optimist Club, he has been selling programs at Boise State football programs, along with other club members, for 37 years. That means he's been a dedicated Bronco fan and a true optimist for serving when the team was building up to the powerhouse that it is today. What's more, he's been wearing the same Optimist Club vest for all of those years.

Frank was recognized at the Boise Noon Optimist Club meeting this week and presented a framed copy of the Idaho Statesman article.

The Boise Noon Optimist Club shares a special relationship with the Boise State athletics. Selling programs at events is one way that the university helps support the Boise Noon Optimist youth football program. During the Humanitarian Bowl, held on December 17, the club was able to raise $744 selling programs. That money is returned directly to the community for the Optimist Youth Sports Complex.

On behalf of the PNW District, I send many thanks to Frank Smoke for his years of service.

Football is not all that the Boise Noon Optimist Club is involved in. This Christmas they could be found raising money ($1,200) for the Idaho Youth Ranch and purchasing coats for girls in the Youth Ranch program, helping with a Christmas party and Santa's Toy Box at St. Luke's Hospital and MSTI, among other things.

What a powerful statement!

As the Tri Cities Optimist Club completes their shopping today for the families they have adopted for the Christmas season, it is easy to see that they are a group that truly enjoys what they are doing, and that they are enjoying each other's company in the process. Finding joy as well as purpose in our lives is so important to our mental well-being.

We often look for our projects to make a difference in the lives of others, but why not take just a few moments, especially during the holiday season, to reflect on how your participation in your Optimist Club has affected you.

Be grateful for the difference the Optimist Club has made in your life and continues to make every day. That's what optimism is all about.

Last Saturday, over 300 Sparks, Brownies, Beavers and Cubs (with assorted leaders, parents and siblings) enjoyed food, fun and a visit from Santa at the Coquitlam Optimist Club's annual Pancake Breakfast.

A new directive to cure childhood cancer

President Jack Creswell has just completed his first board meeting in St. Louis and sends a message to the members of Optimist International about 100% and then some.

For Jack and his wife Sue, the slogan has a special meaning as they, along with the Board of Directors, have promised additional support to John Hopkins University to cure childhood cancer. Optimist members throughout the United States and the Caribbean helped the organization reach its first, second and third level of commitment with the university and stepping up to do just a little more is what being an Optimist is all about.

Watch for more information online and in the Optimist magazine about the $500,000 commitment to cure childhood cancer.

The Optimist Club of Salem honored five students at Youth Appreciation Day on December 9. Recognized for achievement in fine and performing arts were Derrick Holmes, Nick Bailon, Abby Brockamp, Rosita Olaide and Brandon Conrad.

The Salem Optimist Club shared the following story about the students on their Facebook page .

Paul Negstad, chairperson for youth appreciation for many years, shared the emcee role with club president Calvin Steck. Three boys and two girls received plaques and a cash award at the ceremony's conclusion.

Senior Derrick Holmes of Chemawa Indian School is a member of the Hopi tribe in Arizona. He sings and dances with a performing arts group, and also is a student lead in his second year at Chemawa. Derrick intends to attend Arizona State University, major in engineering or architecture and then return to his tribe.

McKay's honoree, Nick Bailon, is a sophomore who both plays cello and makes pottery. His first chair in botht eh McKay and Salem Youth Symphony Orchestrats. Called "an original thinker" by his potter teacher, Nick is in four advance-placement classes. His mother, Lisa Garcia, joined Nick at the luncheon.

Abby Brockamp of North Salem has won first place two years running in district choral competition. A junior, Abby is a soprano who sings in her church choir and directs a choir at girls camp. She is vice president of Norths' Concert choir. Abby's mother, Tammy, was a luncheon Guest.

"She is the embodiment of our choir program." That's how Spraque senior Rosita Olaide was described by directory David Brown. Rosita told the luncheon crowd that she wants to go to Chemeketa Community College and study psychology. At some point, Rosita added, she plans to take over her parent's business, which is a prison drug and alcohol treatment consulting firm.

Brandon Conrad, a senior at Western Mennonite School, told luncheon attendees that he participates in every musical thing at the school. For example, Brandon is in the Jazz band, a cappella choir, and the lead in a musical. Brandon heads the worship team in chapel and he plays the guitar as well as the bass and piano. He is hoping to attend Seattle Pacific University and major in music.

Coats for Kids program going strong in Jerome

The Jerome Optimist Club has been working hard again this year on one of their favorite projects: Coats for Kids. Led by Santa Sheri (Sheri Mitchell), the club recently filled some of their coat orders with help from "elves" in the community from local schools, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.

They also welcomed a donation of 60 coats from the Snake River Corvette Club and Patsy Bland, Chair of the Twin Falls Optimist Club Coats for Kids program dropped by with a donation of $500 for Jerome's Coats for Kids efforts. The donation was a gift from the Magic Valley Early Iron Club, a club that produces classic car shows.

The Coats for Kids program accepts new and gently used coats that the club refurbishes, cleans and redistributes in the community. When sizes are requested that are not on hand or supplies run low, the Optimist Club will purchase coats for children in need. Monetary donations are always appreciated.

Support healthy lifestyle choices with games and fun

The Lake Washington Optimist Club has added "healthy" to the mission statement for their Optimist Club: "By providing hope and a "healthy" positive vision, Optimists bring out the best in kids."

One way they are pursuing that goal is to partner with Bastyr University on the Apple Core Program. Take a look at how simple it is for your Optimist Club to adopt an anti-obesity program and to encourage childhood wellness in your community.

The Optimist Club participated in the program in October and learned how to help children - and adults - make healthy lifestyle choices with games and fun.

Middleton Area Optimist Club finds vital partnership

At a recent meeting, the Middleton Area Optimist Club learned that partnerships can be the key to finding what services your community needs most.

When the Middleton Gazette newspaper publisher and Optimist Club member Becky O'Meara brought her husband, Tim, with her to a meeting to discuss his role as chairman of the Greater Middleton Parks and Recreation District, the idea of movies in the park evolved. Twenty minutes later, a plan was conceived to raise the funds needed to purchase the equipment, including an outdoor screen, projector and PA system, and the Middleton Area Optimist Club was committed to staffing the event on an ongoing basis.

It's a partnership that is still being developed and molded, but one that will bring the Optimist Club greater exposure in the community which they hope will lead to more projects and people that want to work together to do great things for the Middleton area.

Already identified as potential assistants in the project are the area school students, including the Vision Charter School where a JOOI Club is being established. Since the partnership was announced earlier this month, two new members have joined.

According to President Russ Nelson, finding a direction was an important step in the club's progress. "Without a clear purpose, we were losing interest. We're headed in the right direction now with a project that the community will enjoy, and a way to pay for it that will lead to more projects in the future," explained Nelson. He promised to share more information soon.

“How My Optimism Helps Me Overcome Obstacles”

Since its start in 1928, the Oratorical contest has becomethe longest-running program sponsored by Optimist International. The contest is designed for youth to gainexperience in public speaking and to provide them with the opportunity tocompete for a college scholarship.

Optimist International’s 2012 Oratorical Contest has a themethat speaks to the heart of every Optimist volunteer. When a volunteer stands up and says “Yes, Ican!” children are given the opportunity to learn the invaluable skill ofpublic speaking, experience the warmth of volunteers who care, and hear theempowering words of their fellow speakers.

If you and your club think that this is an opportunity thatyou want the children in your community to have, now is the time to start planning for it. Now is the time to let school speech andcommunication departments know about the theme and timelines, contact youth whohave participated in the last couple of years and who might still be eligible,and prepare flyers that can be publicly available in libraries and communitycenters.

It is also time to budget for the contest so that yourcontestants can be offered cash prizes, now possible for club level events. Clubs are allowed to give monetary awards upto $500 per winner in addition to the official medallions. The club level awards may be given in theform of a scholarship, savings bond or cash prize. The cash incentives will attract speakers ofthey know about them.

It started last week. First, Robin Stanhope of the Twin Falls Optimist Club sent a friendly reminder that Christmas was only 45 days away.

Then in the car, I heard it ... you know what I'm talking about ... the dreaded first Christmas carol of the season. Point of order, Mr. DJ, it was not lovely weather for a sleigh ride together because I was happily enjoying the delightful 55 degrees and sunny day with no snow in sight, not even in the Boise foothills.

And then my friends in the Meridian and Eagle Optimist Clubs emailed their flyers for the annual Christmas Tree sales.

Yes, Christmas will be here before you know it. As most of our Optimist Club in the Pacific Northwest District have special activities to celebrate the season, we thought this would be a good time to tell us about them. Please comment here. Tell us:

We are forty days into a new administrative year for Optimist Clubs and Optimist International. By now, your club president should have heard from your Lt. Governor and hopefully, the Lt. Governor visited your club to complete the Annual Club Planning Conference (ACPC) report.

The ACPC is a tool that helps your new club officers plan for the activities that they want to accomplish during the year. By asking obvious questions, like what are your club dues and do you have an annual budget, clubs are reminded that they must tend to the business side of the organization.

By asking the Club Chair names, the president is encouraged to delegate duties. And by asking about goals in membership, participation and service, the Lt. Governor can learn how they might help the clubs in their zone be successful.

The ACPC has returned this year as an important club development resource. International President Jack Creswell emphasizes that Lt. Governors should have this discussion with the clubs in their zone so that they may also identify problems areas and offer district services for support.

Many of the questions on the report can be answered by your secretary-treasurer, but that's really not the point. No one wants to fill out paperwork just for the sake of doing paperwork. Please take ten to fifteen minutes of your time at your next Optimist Club meeting and complete the answers with your club members present. It's a learning and growing experience for all.

PNW District Governor Bill French asks that completed ACPCs be returned to him by November 15.

What's happening in your Optimist Club?

The best way to get the word out about the great things that your Optimist Club does in the community is to write about it, share it on Twitter, post it on Facebook and then talk about it ... a lot.

It's the new age of word of mouth marketing. It used to be sufficient to tell a friend or family member and they would tell another friend and the chain would continue. Today, we still communicate with our friends, but there are so many messages vying for their attention in our technology-driven world that we need to give them reminders; and the best part of that statement is when we give them reminders, we also tell the world.

The PNW District wants to help your Optimist Club share your messages with the world. Tell us a story of service or the details of a project that you have coming up and we will:

Those who attend district meetings regularly most often return home to tell their fellow Optimist Club members, "We have to add new members."

"Why?" they ask. And as we give our laundry list of reasons like making Honor Club, serving our community better, or because it's what we have to do to continue to exist; the message is somehow lost, perhaps because they have heard it all before again and again, from the same person.

John Cozzi, President of the Vancouver, WA Optimist Club attended his first district meeting in Hood River last month. It's not surprising that he returned home with a similar message; however, a fresh new perspective gives a slightly different point of view. Here's what John told his club:

"Fresh off of training from the conference in Hood River, I ascertainedthree major items that both national and locally of what each clubs goalsshould be focused on. The three goals that were given are growing our clubsactive membership, forming committees and fundraising. All three of these goalsare the same goals that I mentioned in my induction speech.

By growing our clubwith ACTIVE members, we will be able to reach more kids with our help andmessage.

Putting committees in place and having people work the committees;will support our ability to help more kids.

The final goal of fundraising willallow our club to reach more groups and support us in getting our message outto more kids.

I believe that meeting each of these goals is attainable for usto reach with the support of all club members.“Bringingout the best in kids” is not a job but an adventure."

What a great message for Optimist Club members. Be active. Encourage others to be active. Make a point to bring a first timer with you to every district meeting and then ask them to share what they learned with others. You will be pleasantly surprised at what fresh voice can do to raise the level of enthusiasm in your club.

According to District Foundation Rep (DFR) Ed Murphy, including this group, fifty-two individuals in the PNW District have already fulfilled their commitment. The Dime-a-Day Plus program is in honor of the 40th Anniversary of the Optimist International Foundation. Donors are asked to give just a little bit more - $40.00 instead of $36.50.

Dime-a-Day and Dime-a-Day Plus contributions are unrestricted donations to the Optimist International Foundations. They fund education programs and materials for Optimist Clubs like the Internet Safety Program.

"I am an Optimist" redux

The Eagle Optimist Club recently held a reception to introduce themselves to the community and to help make others aware of all that they hope to do as an Optimist Club. As part of the presentation, they showed the "I am an Optimist" video. Afterwards, some members said, "I didn't know that."

And that was my hint to share the video here. It's a reminder of the different programs sponsored by Optimist International. Most of all, it is a reminder that we are part of something bigger than ourselves and our local initiatives. What we do at home is important, necessary, and part of the mission of Optimist International; however, knowing that there are other clubs working towards similar goals and resources available to help us achieve more is the best feeling of all.

When was the last time you shared "I am an Optimist" with your Optimist Club? Perhaps some new members haven't seen it. Perhaps it will inspire those who have to do just a little bit more. Enjoy.

PIP Danny Rodgers declares the PNWD Distinguished

Usually, Optimist International does not announce district award recipients until the Board of Directors Meeting in December. However, Danny decided that was too long to wait. At Vision Charter School, 508 students try to break a world record

The new Junior Optimist Club at Vision Charter School in Middleton/Caldwell, Idaho participated in the worldwide program "Let's Jump" to help break the world record for the greatest number of people doing jumping jacks at one time.

With their leadership, 508 students were motivated to "Jump for JOOI" on Wednesday morning. In addition to helping to break the world record, the students thought it was a great way to raise awareness for their new club.

Sponsored by the Middleton Area Optimist Club, the new JOOI Club will officially charter on October 24.

The Lake Washington Optimist Club recently held a T-shirt design competition at K-TUB.

What's a K-TUB?

Well, I'm glad you asked! K-TUB is the acronym for the Kirkland Teen Union Building. The building and programs were recently reorganized under the Bellevue Family, WA YMCA management and the new Optimist Club has been there to provide support.

Some of the goals identified by the YMCA sound like a great fit for an Optimist Club. I think you'll agree.

"YMCA/KTUB goals include continuing youth driven programs, increasing opportunities for youth, strengthening current activities/programs, implementing new activities/programs and offering a continuum of casual (drop-in or one-time events) activities."

The winning t-shirt was designed by a young lady named Gayle, a K-TUB participant.

What a great way to become known in their community. Great job Lake Washington Optimists!

It's time for the PNW District to come together for the First Quarter Meeting of the 2011-2012 administrative year!

How fast we hand over the leadership duties from one Optimist leader to the next. Only a few days ago, we were rushed to add new members and go out a high note. The beauty of that strategy is that we also come in a high note. That means our Optimist Club members are already charged up about serving even more kids and they are ready to learn all about the new programs next week in Hood River.

Governor Bill French looks forward to welcoming you and sharing the new recognition program for Honor Clubs. Now is the time to plan for retention, recruitment and service. You'll get fresh ideas at the conference to take home and make a difference. You'll also learn all about the scholarship programs and district-wide efforts to help your club succeed.

Joining us on her first official visit to the PNW District will be the Region 7 Vice President for 2011-2012 Esthermarie Hillman. Esthermarie hails from the Pueblo Optimist Club in Tuscon, Arizona where she has served since 1996. She has been involved in all aspects of Optimist Club leadership including Distinguished and Outstanding Governor, Certified New Club Builder, Certified International Trainer, and the Optimist International Governance Committee.

She is also involved in the Communications Contest for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and serves as a deaf community coach at the Arizona State School for the Deaf.

Esthermarie is committed to the Optimist International Foundation and has fulfilled an Assisting Children through Exceptional Service (ACE) pledge to raise $50,000 for the Foundation.

How did Governor Bill French and first lady Evelyn spend the first day of the new Optimist Club year?

Golfing. To raise money for children's projects. With his home club, the Hillsboro Optimist Club.

Isn't that what being an Optimist Club member is all about? Yes, even district leaders find time to be involved with club projects and make a difference at home.

Before leaving for the golf course, Governor Bill sent a message to the club presidents, lt. governors and committee chairs. He said,

"Congratulations! Wow!! We are all official now. I know that many of you have been working in your new positions already because we have been exchanging emails, making big decisions and moving forward. We will have a great year!

I am looking forward to working with each one of you and getting better acquainted as we bring out the best in kids. Let's give the kids a hand. I will see you all in Hood River."

And with that friends, we are off and running and ready to give 100% and then some to the kids and clubs in the PNW District.

The North Okanagan Optimist club formed last night in Vernon British Columbia with 23 new Optimists to become the 50th club in our district. Congratulations to Hal Griffin and Peter Smith for all of your work and attaining the Builder of Excellence award. Well deserved.

I would also like to thank Al Kersey and Sandy Larivee for all of your efforts in making this club a reality. This will be the first of many new potential clubs in the Okanagan Valley.

Optimist Clubs, like most groups, speak in acronyms. Among the most popular are:

COER - Club Officer Election Report
ACPC - Annual Club Planning Conference
OIF - Optimist International Foundation
CCC - [Cure] Childhood Cancer Campaign
CCDHH - Communications Contest for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

One that is not so well known unless you like statistics is the T-Shot. I'm not sure what the "T" stands for, but I can tell you that the T-Shot is a look at where your Optimist Club stands in membership from the beginning of the administrative year (October 1) through today. (Maybe the "T" stands for today?)

Before online technology was ubiquitous, District Governors would receive a weekly mailing that let them know what clubs had added and deleted members along with the easy to read snapshot report called the T-Shot. (Maybe "Shot"stands for snapshot?) The engaged governor would then call the clubs who had added or deleted a significant number of members to give praise or express concern.

With the internet and Optimist Leaders Online, the T-Shot, and other membership reports are available to anyone who cares to look at them; and they are available at all times, updated throughout the day. If a club adds a member at 5:00 p.m., it is reflected immediately on the T-Shot and on other reports by 10:00 p.m.

As an example, from reading the T-Shot, I know that the Twin Falls Optimist Club added two members today, one is a traditional member and one is a Friend of Optimist.

Why do I know this? Because of their significant growth this year, I have been watching the Twin Falls Optimist Club, excited about the enthusiasm their club has created in their community and cheering for them to do more.

I believe the urgency to call and offer praise or support to our club leaders is reduced by how easy and ordinary it is for an Optimist Club to add and delete members - except for at this time of year when we are in the final stretch.

Unlike Optimist Clubs where our service goes on continuously without significant interruption, Optimist District and International leaders are replaced on an annual cycle. As of today, they have 16 days left to show they have made a difference in the only quantifiable measure offered by Optimist International: membership growth.

At the Optimist Club level, we know when we have made a difference because we feel it in the pride that we have for our projects. Hardly any gathering goes by without the underlying theme, "We could do even more if we had more members."

District and International leaders know that as well, and with a little over two weeks left, they will pull out every tool to inspire your Optimist Club provide more service through membership growth. This little report that you may or may not have known about, the T-Shot is the barometer for the district and your Optimist Club's health.

The T-Shot is a quick, easy way to look at how our Optimist Clubs have grown throughout the year, but we must work together to be sure it is a report that gives positive, uplifting news. Help us quantify the impact of our Optimist Clubs by asking someone to join your Optimist Club today.

Just in time for the 1st Annual Wings & Things Ultimate Tailgate Challenge, the Twin Falls Optimist Club issued a new challenge to their club members. They said, "Let's add 20 new Friends of Optimists to our club so President Danny will come and visit us!"

With the excitement for their new annual fundraiser, the Twin Falls Optimist Club has already added 38 new Optimist Club members to their roster this year. Adding just a few more might be a challenge, but according to membership recruiting mavens Barry Knoblich and Danae Climes, it is doable with a little help from their friends. So while they are cooking wings and chili in the park today, I imagine the Twin Falls Optimist Club members will be talking about how great it is to share their activities with others as a member or supporter of an Optimist Club. They will be asking others to get involved and join their club.

What is your Optimist Club doing today to add Friends of Optimists and traditional members to your list of volunteers? We know that the key is to just ask, but you have to visible in your community in order to find people to ask. Where will you find your next member? Where did you find your latest member?

To get the word out, the Twin Falls Optimist Club place billboards around town and then asked club members to be the first to find them. Robin Stanhope beat the crowd and proudly displays one of her finds here.

Notes and notables from the PNW District Optimist Convention

The Pacific Northwest District Optimist Clubs came together on August 25-27 for the annual convention. This year's event was held in Bellevue, Washington with the brand new Lake Washington Optimist Club welcoming us to their community. Charter president Lisa Leo and Governor Ed Murphy made us feel right at home.

Larry Blackburn

As always, a lot of things happen at a district meeting and being there is the only way to really feel the energy. Some of the highlights were:

Larry Blackburn was elected to serve as Governor-elect for 2011-2012. He will become Governor in 2012-2013.

Bill French was sworn into office as Governor for 2011-2012, along with his lieutenant governors and two most recent past governors, to begin service on October 1, 2011.

Sue and Jack Creswell

Jack Creswell, Optimist International President-Designate performed the installation honors and gave us much to think about with the new theme of 100% and then some.

Sue Creswell, Optimist International Certified Trainer and first lady-to-be presented training to incoming officers along with Jack and the PNW Leadership Development team.

A barbecue was held at "Ed's Lake" a mere thirty minute drive from the hotel where the group was mesmerized by the young musicians, the Daus Brothers, and enjoyed boat rides, good food, and great company.

Of course, Governor Ed presided over the official business of the convention leading the shortest Board of Directors meeting in PNW District history.

MK Mueller, author of 8 to Great led a motivational workshop inspiring participants to use the Optimist Creed to attract and retain members.

Even though the election was already in the bag, Larry Blackburn was caught politicking at the Old Timer's Breakfast where he and Flo gave us a look at what it was like to live 100 years as an Idaho potato farmer. (sometimes you just have to be there)

At the governor's awards dinner, Fred Wallace was honored with the Roy Proctor Award for Lifetime Service to the PNW District.

Larry Krangle, member of the Vancouver BC Optimist Club was recognized for 60 years membership with perfect attendance, nonetheless.

We were honored to meet a number of first-timers to our district convention. We hope they will all return to see us often.

And the final meeting of the year would not have been complete without a missing bell and gavel. First-timer Becky Holm of the Roseburg Optimist Club proved she was part of the district family by holding "Belle" for ransom and texting the governor to prompt a donation to the Optimist International Foundation for her safe return.

Governor Ed turned over the bell and gavel safely to Governor-designate Bill French, but not before thanking those who were there and all others by extension for their service and dedication to their Optimist Clubs throughout the year. With 34 days (now 30) left to achieve your club's goals, he reminded us that it is possible to add more members, including Friends of Optimists, and meet the 20% new member goal set by Optimist International President Danny Rodgers for all Optimist Clubs this year.

101 Optimist Club Members and Counting

It's official! This week, the Twin Falls Optimist Club is having more fun!

According to membership records and their newsletter, The Blab, as of August 18, the club has met their own challenge to increase their membership to 101 members.

President Keleigh Godfrey started out this year with a goal and a plan. Her goal was for the Twin Falls Optimist Club to reach 101 members. "It's more fun with 101," she said.

The plan was to enlist everyone to help. Membership co-chairs, Barry Knoblich and Danae Klimes provided ongoing motivation and encouraged everyone to bring guests to the meetings (and they did!).

They also made suggestions every week in their newsletter for where to find potential members including past Optimist Club members, business partners, "the family plan," and even a little target marketing to the Hispanic community to serve the large number of kids that are just out of reach.

The secret to their success lies in the enthusiasm that Keleigh, Barry, Danae and other members of the club brought to the challenge and the orientation and retention efforts to keep new and existing members involved and engaged.

Since October 1, 2010, the Twin Falls Optimist Club has added 38 members and deleted 8. What a great way to serve the community.

Experience Optimism: Shooting for the Olympics:
Mitchell Van Patten won the sporter division of the American Legion's Junior Air Rifle National Championships on August 6. He earned a $2,500 scholarship and made another step toward his goal of shooting in the Olympics.

The Junior Rifle Program has been sponsored by the Meridian Optimist Club since 1972. In 1997, the club took responsibility for the program, coaches, facilities and shooters and are now raising funds to build a new building as the Meridian Optimist Youth Training Center. Optimist Club members first learned of author and motivational speaker MK Mueller at the 2009 Optimist International Convention held in Orlando, Florida where she entertained and engaged the audience with her powerful message of how to find strength and gratitude in our lives. She brought the audience to their feet after her presentation.

Now MK is coming to the Pacific Northwest especially for the PNW Optimist District Convention! We will be blessed with a full afternoon of her amazing "8 to Great-ness" workshop that is based on the same concepts as our Optimist Creed. Powerfully practical, MK will give us life-changing ideas on how to grow and strengthen our clubs as well as how to grow and strengthen our own optimism and courage.

Optimistic support of the Oregon National Guard

The Hillsboro Optimist Club pledged to support the Oregon National Guard Delta Company before they deployed in 2009. Although the unit returned last year, the Optimist Club's commitment and involvement continues today.

Monte Akers, a leader of the project and member of the Hillsboro Optimist Club provided the following pictures with the description of one of their recent activities with the unit, "Attached are pictures from the Oregon National Guard Delta CompanyPicnic for soldiers and their families after they had returned from their twoweek training summer camp. They are also the soldiers that returned from a 1year deployment in Iraq last year. The Hillsboro Optimist Club teamed up withthe Delta Company Family Readiness Group to provide a Bouncy House, HomeDepot Pencil Box Projects and Face Painter for the kids. We also, provideda Santa and gifts for the kids while the soldiers were deployed."

Students, start writing!

The kids are headed back to school in just a few short weeks! That means it is time to begin communicating with students, parents and teachers about the Annual Optimist International Essay Contest.

The topic this year is "How My Positive Outlook Benefits My Community."

Students under the age of 18 as of December 31, 2011 may compete for a $2,500 scholarship by writing 700 to 800 words on the assigned topic and submitting their entry to the local Optimist Club.

The contest begins at the club level. First place entries from all clubs are forwarded to the District level where the essay is judged against all other club winning entries to achieve the $2,500 award.

District winners are forwarded to the international level where the top essay writer is recognized in The Optimist magazine.

This contest has become quite popular in the PNW District. Please be sure to review the rules pad and club chair package because there are some changes to the contest this year.

True to Pacific Northwest District tradition, we are pleased to announce that Jack Creswell, Optimist International President-Designate will be joining us for the District Convention.

His spouse, Sue Creswell, will join him and together they will lead the orientation and education sessions for the incoming leadership team including club presidents and secretary/treasurers and district lieutenant governors and committee chairs.

In addition to being the designated president and first lady, Jack and Sue are Certified International Trainers for Optimist International. Their sessions are sure to be inspirational as well as informative.

Jack has chosen for his theme "100% and then some." On Friday afternoon, all members and guests are invited to participate in a session to learn the story behind the theme and how you can be involved in the coming year.

Of course Jack and Sue will also be promoting a strong finish for the 2010-2011 administrative year on behalf of International President Danny Rodgers and explaining about the strong incentives in place for your club to add members now.

Add, add, delete your way to Honor Club

Optimist Club year

Your Optimist Club president has received emails from International President Danny Rodgers this week that explain how easy it is for your club to be an Honor Club.

Actually, it has never been easier than this year to reach that recognition. All that President Danny has asked his team (that's you!) to do this year is to add at least 20% new member additions to your Optimist Club. For the first time in my history, your Optimist Club will not be penalized for deletions, but you will be congratulated for additions. Don't worry about "net," just add, add, and delete when necessary.

Okay, so it is pretty easy to do. Why should you want to do it?

Many Optimist Club leaders express a disinterest in receiving awards or recognition for their community service. However, reaching Honor Club is more than a level of recognition. It is the way your club continually builds for future service.

In order to serve your community to the best of your club's ability, it is your responsibility to plan for succession. The easiest way to be sure there is someone to take your place is to be proactive in asking others to join. You never know who is interested...until you ask. You never know who the next leader may be...until you ask.

Of course, you really should do just a little more. Complete and submit your President's Pride report and tell everyone about all the great things your Optimist Club does. When complete, print it out and use it to help create an annual report to tell the community about your Optimist Club

Be sure that Optimist International knows who has been elected to serve your club in 2011-2012. It's important; Optimist International wants and needs to communicate with them! So does the PNW District.

Pay your bills. We are fortunate to belong to an international organization that provides resources and insurance, but we have to always invest in that benefit.

Finally, reach out and help your fellow Optimist Clubs. As a club president, you serve on the District Board of Directors. Provide counsel on the direction of your region and our organization by attending the district meetings and convention. You'll meet new friends, share ideas, and be a voice for the Optimist Club members and projects that you represent.

I have an incredible treat for you. MK Mueller will be our key-note speaker at our District Convention in Bellevue, Wa. August 25-27th. International trainer and author of the best selling book "8 to Great," MK Mueller began her professional life as a high school teacher when she hit rock bottom and found herself in a domestic violence shelter. From the depths of despair, she experienced life-changing insights as she discovered that we are not victims because the power to effect change is always within us.

Meanwhile, she is dedicated to the empowerment of our youth, and trains thousands of middle and high school teachers each year in her 8 to Great Success Curriculum. Yes way! We have a plan and we know it will work. More information to follow. Any club that accomplishes this by our Convention will also receive a visit from Abraham Lincoln for any local school of your choice. The first club to reach 20 will receive special recognition at our Convention. Let's do it.

The Optimist Club in Vancouver, Washington is in fundraising mode and everyone is invited to participate, especially those of you who live in the Portland-Vancouver area. It's just a short trip to enjoy good food and fellowship and help make a little money for the cause.

What's the cause? The Optimist Club of Vancouver Foundation is seeking donations for improvements for the following projects at the Youth Camp: restoration of the cook house to include foundation work, siding, and possibly a new roof as well as other camp maintenance work.

The Hillsboro Optimist Club participated in the 4th of July Parade.

The Portland-Peninsula Optimist Club sold fireworks, as did the Optimist Club of Horseshoe Bend.

Notes from the Optimist International Convention

For four days, Optimist Club members from the PNWD gathered with Other Optimist Clubs from around the world at the 93rd Annual Optimist International Convention. They shared fellowship, traded ideas, participated in training and planned for the future by voting on amendments to the bylaws and electing international officers for 2012-2013.

Joining the International Board of Directors are Michael Goldman of Florida and Paul Lucas of Texas. Linda "Mo" Molthen of the PSED was appointed vice president and J. C. St. Onge was elected as president.

Amendments to the bylaws were adopted to make self nominations more inclusive and the financial issues for pension trustees and district reporting were passed; however, the Childhood Cancer Campaign and suggestion to change the Optimist Creed failed.

A resolution to create program called the Childhood Wellness Campaign passed.

Chehalis-Centralia Optimists host Safety on Wheels

The Chehalis-Centralia Optimist Club held a Bicycle Safety Fair/Safety on Wheels on June 18. Helmets were provided for all kiddos who needed them, even those in wheelchairs!

Three lucky young cyclists went home with new bikes and club members and police officers showed that no one was too young to learn how to be safe on the road.

Pancake Breakfast in Roseburg

Taking the place of the fireworks fund raiser this year, the Roseburg Optimist Club will host a Rock'n Roll'n Pancake Breakfast on July 9. They say it's less work and more fun, plus the club has signed on some sponsors that are bound to make it a great foodie experience for all: Shari's Restaurant, Dutch Brothers Coffee, and Umpqua Dairy. Sounds like a great breakfast combo to me!

The club is looking for kitchen help, setter-uppers, servers, cleaner-uppers, money collectors and entertainers. Yes! Entertainment will be as plenty as the pancakes. Stop by Riverforks Park, July 9, 8:00 am to 11:00 am and enjoy.

Get ready for Rocky Jackson

Optimist Club members in the Pacific Northwest District with Facebook accounts have most likely seen this fun video. It was put together to support Rocky Jackson for President-elect of Optimist International, and we wanted to share it with others, those of you who might not be on Facebook.

The theme is two-fold. First, we don't often have a choice for President-elect of Optimist International. Generally one person is nominated by the Candidates Qualifications Committee and then that person has traditionally run unopposed. This year, in line with the bylaws amendments that are being considered and to help return leadership to the people, Rocky Jackson announced his intent to run, received the backing of all governors in the west region and now asks for your support. PNW District supports Rocky Jackson for Optimist International President-elect

The Pacific Northwest District is proud to announce their support of Rocky Jackson for the position of President-elect of Optimist International.

Rocky served as District Governor in 1992-1993 and since that time has supported the District in various roles including New Club Building Chair, District Foundation Representative, and leadership and membership development. He has worked tirelessly with many clubs from Idaho to British Columbia and beyond to help them with projects and to achieve their goals. He is especially active with clubs in Idaho and the Boise Valley in particular.

In an unprecedented event, Rocky was elected from the floor at the 2009 Optimist International Convention in Florida to serve as Vice President of the West Region. Since October, he has spent nearly 100 days on the road visiting districts, zones and clubs throughout the West Coast.

Rocky empowers others with his passion for Optimist Clubs and the mission of our organization. It is with that knowledge that the Optimist Clubs in the Pacific Northwest District hereby fully support Rocky Jackson for Optimist International President-elect. Harry White, Tournament Director, PNW District - CA Qualifier for the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships has created quite a collaborative event with the Canadian Junior Golf Association.

This year 45 junior golfers played in the two-day tournament held on April 30 - May 1, 2011.

This Saturday is Child Safety Day in Eagle

The Eagle Optimist Club will hold the second annual Child Safety Day at the Landing Community Center on Saturday, June 18, 1:00 to 4:00 pm.

Activities scheduled include bicycle safety, fire prevention, and personal safety. There will be demonstrations, exhibits and door prizes.

To draw attention to the event, the Eagle Optimist Club recruited a major sponsor, Washington Trust Bank, and participated along with them at the Family Fun Area, a new attraction at Eagle Fun Days. Along with inflatables, miniature golf, spin art, and face painting, children were asked to make a drawing of something they do to stay safe. All entries will go into a drawing for movie passes at Edwards Cinemas.

Serving Schwans and Tennis in Middleton

The Middleton Area Optimist Club is working with the Middle School to start up a brand new school tennis program. The club has volunteered to purchase equipment and help with coaching or travel expenses, depending on what is needed most. A summer camp is planned to introduce students to the game. It will coincide with the completion of the new tennis courts at the school in August of this year.

With the help of Schwans, depot manager Russ Nelson and "the Schwans Guys," the Middleton Area Optimist Club held their first successful fundraiser for the program today. Fifteen percent of all items purchased at the truckload sale will go directly to the Optimist Club program.

Another sale is planned for the first Saturday in August.

Beaverton Optimist Club builds a playground at John Marty Park

The Optimist Club of Beaverton, Oregon has been busy working with the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District to spruce up another park in their community. What's the best way to spruce up a park? With playground equipment, of course!

Last week, when Beaverton Optimist Club president Alan Zehntbauer sent 46 pictures of the project to me, I emailed back that I would get them on the website later in the week. He replied, "Oh, not all of them, but some of them are so darn cute."

I agree, Alan, there are some cute ones and I removed a few; but together, they tell the story. I like them all. Enjoy!

Every year, the Abbotsford Optimist Club hosts Family Fun Days, a free activity for all ages that includes food, refreshments and entertainment. This year, the club is pleased to announce that the Vikings are returning to "Abbot's Fjord" to reclaim the land they first set foot upon last year.

These fun-loving Norsemen will initiate a friendly raid at the Trethewey House, 2313 Ware Street, Abbotsford, June 11, 2011, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 pm. As part of the Reik Felag (travelling fellowship), they will demonstrate weapons and armour, weaving, music, food, naalbinding, metalworks and other arts and crafts and spin stories of their travels, Norse myths, and Viking tales.

Children and their parents will also enjoy treasure hunts, puzzle contests and a coloring contest.

About 70 Optimist Club members gathered in Salem, Oregon for the Third Quarter District Meeting on April 29-30. More details from the meeting, including our Oratorical and Communications Contests results, will be published later this week, but we wanted to post a quick update on one of the major business items of the weekend: Lieutenant Governor-elect Elections.

Unanimously elected to join Bill French and the 2011-2012 district leadership team are:

To be elected governor-elect, candidates must have completed a term of club president and lieutenant governor. It is a self-nominating process. Letters of interest should be sent to Linda Jackson.

Get involved in Optimist Junior Golf

The Optimist International Junior Golf Championships - PNW District Qualifying Tournaments are being held this year in Oregon and British Columbia. There is still time to participate in the US division, to be held at Meriwether Golf Course, Hillsboro, Oregon, on June 12, 2011.

This picture is really what it is all about; a young man, dressed for success on the golf course, displaying concentration and control and a determination to win.

This picture tells the story just a little more as the junior golfers line up, waiting their turn to tee off. Last year 48 golfers came from Oregon, Washington and Idaho to participate.

They weren't all boys - young ladies showed up as well and proved just as formidable as the young men.

But in the end, first place is awarded to one outstanding golfer in each category: Boys 10-11, 12-13, 14-15, 16-18 and Girls 10-12, 13-14, 15-18.

Don't you want to be involved?
There are different ways that Optimist Clubs or individual golfers may choose to participate.

Optimist Clubs can sponsor junior golfers by paying their registration fees. Only $75!
Optimist Clubs can hold pre-qualifying club-level tournaments and offer as a prize the opportunity to receive paid or partially paid trips to the district tournament.
Individual golfers may choose to participate on their own, without sponsorship.

Invite someone to join your circle of Friends today

Have you been thinking about membership in your Optimist Club? Last week we learned that the Optimist Club of Roseburg is making a concerted effort to bring in new members so that they can do even more in their community.

This week, we want to hear from you! What is your club doing to attract, recruit and retain members and what have you personally done to help them?

Have you taken a morning or afternoon to Walk 'n Talk about your Optimist Club in your community?
Are you actively seeking leads?
Have you joined your Chamber of Commerce or other networking resource in your community?
Are you hosting a New Optimists Welcome (NOW) activity?
Were volunteers from outside the organization invited to participate in your latest program?
Have you added a Friend of Optimist to your club's roster?

We can be passive, do good projects, and hope that others like what they see enough to get involved. Or we can be more proactive, more inviting. To help you extend the invitation to even more people, Optimist International has created the Friends of Optimist category.

You see, Optimist International understands that not everyone wants to commit to attending meetings. They know that businesses would like to support our clubs even though the owner or manager can't be away from work at the time the club meets. The value of the Friends of Optimist membership option is that it allows a new member to associate with your Optimist Club at the level that appeals to them with no other strings attached. Your club and Optimist International will communicate with Friends, and when the time is right, we believe that Friends will become more involved, maybe with donations or maybe with time.

Optimist International believes in this category of membership so much, they have also created an incentive for Optimist Clubs to try it out. The "Find some Friends" incentive:

Add 3 Friends of Optimist to your club between January 1 and June 30, 2011 and your club will get to add 1 new traditional member at no charge for processing and no charge for International Dues until September 30, 2012. The new traditional member must be added by August 31 of the current Optimist fiscal year.

Waiving dues, and receiving banner patches are not the reason to add members. Those are merely a thank-you for doing so. The reason we add members is to share our passion with others. Won't you do that? Share what you like about being a member and ask someone to join your Optimist Club, as a Friend of Optimist or a traditional member, today.

The Optimist Club of Roseburg, Oregon marks the southernmost boundary of our very large Pacific Northwest District. Because of the distance, we don't often see members from the Roseburg Optimist Club at our gatherings.

Too bad - they have some great ideas they could share with other Optimist Clubs like the Santa Hotline, the Halloween Closet where children can borrow a costume, and the newest program, found hidden on the back page of their most recent bulletin:

Senior project to benefit children with cancer

Meet Mike Steinlight.

Hint: he's the oldest one in the picture and a member of the Tri-Cities Optimist Club in Pasco-Tri-Cities, Washington. He is also the adviser to the students in the picture (right to left) Terra Olson, Cynthia Diaz and Israel Rios at Pasco High School.

After a visit to the Sacred Heart Children's Hospital in Spokane, the students decided to take on a senior project to benefit the children in the pediatric cancer unit. During their visit, they learned that chemotherapy strains vision and hearing and since children are often in-patient for treatment, sometimes for months at a time, the students decided there should be larger televisions in the patients rooms.

The project, playfully dubbed the "Bigger Picture" has the students reaching out to the community to help raise $13,000 - the amount needed for twenty-five 32" televisions. The big fundraising event is a dinner dance and auction, to be held at the Red Lion Hotel in Pasco on April 29.

Auction donations are welcome, and tickets are available from the students or members of the Tri-Cities Optimist Club who, according to Charlie Kissler, are helping the students get this project done. Contact Charlie Kissler to learn more.
